I do not like it, so I do not think I really need to know.
I hardly use it, so I do not think I really need to know.
It's complicated, why don't you just call me?
Those were the typical answers that I got from several acquantainces of mine whenever I asked them about their email. I usually just sighed with desperation but of course saying nothing at all.
Now, let me think, when did exactly I started using email? I think it was around 1998, when the economic crisis hit Indonesia. Usually I use post regular classic mail with envelope and stamps (I used to collect them). Then when the cost of mailing letter also increase, my ex supervisor (now living in Singapore) introduce me with this new thing called Internet and email. She taught me a little bit. So, the next thing that I should try to do is look for Cyber Cafe which is not easy and very expensive. Every saturday I would prepare myself going to the Post Office, not to use the regular mail but to use the internet service which they provide for public, with charges Rp. 10,000 per hour or below USD 1 around that time. And I do not need to mention that the connection was terrible! It takes such a loooong time to open just one site. I created several emails not because I need them for different purposes. But I simply just forgot the password. After a while I finally manage to have my permanent email with password that I use to all my emails. Yeah, I know. It is not safe. But, hey... I only use my email for fun. Not to send and receive some confidential file about living creature in Mars or something. I love to use email, because well bassically, I find it hard to talk with my old friends... I often loose topics of conversation. So, by using email, I could just drop one single word like HI! What's UP...? Just to stay connected and inform them, I am still around. Unfortunately, not all of them thinking the same thing. Sighed...
But anyway, I am glad to be introduced to the internet. To tell you the truth, I found many good friends of mine through mailing list or internet forum. I have lost contact with all my friends from High School and University. ANd if not for the internet, I think I am going to be the most lonely person on the planet... Hehehehehehehehe. Kidding. But it is true.
Then again, if people still find uncomfortable using the internet and emails, can you really deride them? My parents still having trouble to use the CD player, for heaven sakes... Maybe they just do not think it is necessary. I mean, perhaps their work does not involve that or they do think it is necessary to involve internet. Or simply they are not just interested to spend their spare time to sit in front of the PC and started browsing or chatting.
I still have friends like that... and just accept them just the way they are... :) (silently thinking how to persuade them using the internet and emails... any ideas?)
